Early Signs of Frozen Shoulder Pain
Early Signs of Frozen Shoulder Pain
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) usually starts slowly and worsens over time. Recognizing the early symptoms can help you begin treatment sooner and prevent severe stiffness.
1️⃣ Mild Shoulder Pain
One of the first signs is dull or aching pain in the shoulder, especially after activity or at the end of the day.
2️⃣ Gradual Shoulder Stiffness
You may notice that your shoulder feels tighter than usual and movements become slightly restricted.
3️⃣ Difficulty Raising the Arm
Lifting your arm above your head or reaching for something on a shelf becomes uncomfortable.
4️⃣ Pain at Night
Shoulder pain may become more noticeable at night, especially when lying on the affected side.
5️⃣ Reduced Range of Motion
You may feel that your shoulder does not move as freely as before, particularly when rotating the arm.
6️⃣ Difficulty with Daily Activities
Simple activities may start becoming uncomfortable, such as:
-
Wearing clothes
-
Combing hair
-
Reaching behind the back
7️⃣ Pain While Reaching Behind the Back
Actions like fastening a bra, scratching your back, or putting a wallet in your pocket can cause discomfort.
8️⃣ Shoulder Feels Tight or Heavy
Some people experience a feeling of tightness or heaviness in the shoulder joint.
9️⃣ Pain Spreading to Upper Arm
The pain may spread from the shoulder to the upper arm but usually does not go below the elbow.
🔟 Slow but Progressive Symptoms
Frozen shoulder typically worsens gradually over weeks or months, rather than appearing suddenly.
✅ Important: Frozen shoulder develops in three stages:
-
Freezing Stage – Increasing pain and stiffness
-
Frozen Stage – Severe stiffness but less pain
-
Thawing Stage – Gradual improvement
Early treatment with stretching exercises, physiotherapy, and posture correction can help prevent severe stiffness.
