How Do You Know You Have Sciatica ?

Sciatica — How Do I Know If I Have It?

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve (running from the lower back through the hips and down each leg) becomes irritated or compressed. It usually affects one side of the body and produces a specific pattern of symptoms.

1. Pain That Travels From Lower Back to Leg

The most common sign is radiating pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and moves down the back of the thigh and leg, sometimes reaching the foot.

Typical feeling:

  • Sharp or burning pain

  • Electric-shock like sensation

  • Pain that worsens when sitting

2. Numbness or Tingling in the Leg

You may feel:

  • Pins and needles in the leg or foot

  • Numbness in certain areas of the leg

  • Reduced sensation in the affected side

3. Weakness in the Leg or Foot

Some people experience:

  • Difficulty lifting the foot

  • Weakness when walking

  • Trouble standing on toes or heels

4. Pain That Gets Worse With Certain Movements

Sciatica pain often increases when:

  • Sitting for long periods

  • Sneezing or coughing

  • Bending forward

  • Standing up from a chair

5. Relief When Lying Down

Many people feel temporary relief when lying flat or walking slowly, but the pain returns when sitting again.

Simple Self-Check (Straight Leg Raise Test)

A basic home test doctors often use:

  1. Lie flat on your back.

  2. Slowly raise the affected leg while keeping it straight.

  3. If pain shoots down the leg between 30–70 degrees, it may indicate sciatica.

⚠️ This test is not a final diagnosis, but it can suggest nerve irritation.

When You Should See a Doctor

Seek medical help if:

  • Pain lasts more than 2–3 weeks

  • Severe leg weakness occurs

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control appears

  • Pain becomes unbearable

Doctors may confirm sciatica using:

  • Physical examination

  • MRI scan

  • CT scan

  • X-ray

Common Causes

Sciatica is often caused by:

  • Herniated Disc

  • Spinal Stenosis

  • Degenerative Disc Disease

Key point: If your pain travels from the lower back through the buttock and down one leg with tingling or numbness, it is a strong sign of sciatica.
